Natural Elasticity - W.I.Y.S.S?

Miriam Rachel Scheller

This masterwork uses over spun woollen yarns in knitted materials. Using over-twisted yarns enables reactionary design and explores the colour, rituals, patterns, and expressive material development methods with a regenerative alternative to fossil fuel-based elastics. The results are knitted textile tubes that interact with the body. This artistic and poetic expression within the work is created through using Nigerian colours and symbols utilized in Uli, a practice of body painting practised by the Igbo Tribe. The texture is inspired by the concept of ritual pollution, which is closely linked to the earth.
