Approximations to the acrobatics of flesh

Andrea Rehbein

Subverting pattern construction through abstraction to explore new subjectivities From dead stock materials, the project proposes abstraction as a tool, and craft as a language of individuality, to explore new ways of interacting with clothes, identity and space.

Sculptural abstract forms are made from engraved cut leather, generating unexpected shapes. This shapes are then traced and embedded into archetypical garment patterns. The abstract elements disrupt traditional silhouettes, while principles of balance, tension and construction guide their integration into each garment’s anatomy. The sensitivity of pattern drafting —where even minor changes reshape the whole— leads to ongoing iterations that alter both the garment and its connection to the body.

Through this process, the garment becomes an intimate space where fixed ideas of subjectivity and form become fluid. The clothing appears frozen in its making, expressing an ever-changing state of becoming. By embedding sculptural abstraction into garment construction, the project opens up perspectives on the role of fashion as a living, human-centered practice. It proposes us to engage with the fragility and liminality of our own personal boundaries as subjects, humans, living organisms.
