The Art of “Pommersche Fischerteppiche” in Past, Present and Future…

Carlotta Talkenberger

This degree work in Textile Design explores method of reviving the visuals of traditional crafts through the modern lens through the example of the German “Pommersche Fischerteppiche”. The chosen technique within this investigation is jacquard weaving. Another layer is added to the pieces through exploration of crafting, by attaching hanging threads, braiding and working with embroidery, putting focus on the tradition through details. This allows for exploration of tactility and movement in the patterns, through the intertwine of threads and the woven piece.

The outcome is three suggestions for exploring traditional visuals from a modern perspective inspired by current reflections on craft as a form of art and distortion. Three fabrics have been exploring patterns through usage of colour, materials and added craft elements. The result is a suggestion on reviving traditional crafts through exploration of their visuals, by combining patterns with handmade detail elements.
