COMPOSING TONES

Ida Romme

This project translates the music of Danish jazz-folk trio Hvalfugl into physical forms, exploring how musical rhythm and emotional qualities become objects that shift with light and space. Using stoll machines, thin steel and silk threads were knitted to create surfaces that catch light like morning dew on spider webs. Laser-cut cardboard panels feature perforations and yarn mending that create transparency and visual rhythm.

Each instrument carries its own color identity: fluorescent pink and orange embody the captivating electric guitar; deep blue, rooted purple, and golden brown represent the grounding bass; silky grey, pine green, and mint capture the graceful piano.

The pieces function as room dividers while remaining sculptural individuals—they transform with room conditions, lighting, and movement around them. Like New Nordic music, which blends tradition with contemporary ideas, these textiles connect aesthetic experience with everyday life, translating sound's emotional qualities into physical form that invites both functional use and artistic reflection.
