Contrast in Dialogue

Margot Leverrier

The project explores the concept of contrast through the interaction of brushed felt and lace, two textile techniques with inherently opposing characteristics. It investigates how differing material behaviors can give rise to innovative knitted textile expressions that challenge conventional perceptions of knitwear. Divided into two phases, the project begins with the creation of an extensive textile library through hands on experimentation.

This phase focuses on how materials respond to manipulation, emphasizing texture, structure, and how textiles interact with the body. Through manual interventions, industrially produced samples are altered to explore the influence of pattern, color, and structure on the experience of contrast.

In the second phase, these findings are applied in the development of five wearable looks inspired by the lace traditions of Normandy. By merging industrial precision with handcraft techniques such as brushing and felting, the project highlights new possibilities for material innovation and the integration of artisanal and machine-made processes in textile design.
