Liquid Relics. Staining as a form to explore body relations in fashion design.

Paweł Robuta

Liquid Relics is a collection of nine experimental draped silhouettes exploring the concept of the stain. Stains, often seen as marks of guilt or imperfection, are reimagined here as symbols of presence, intimacy, and transformation. Bodily fluids, typically the source of stains, can elevate garments to artifacts - like the Shroud of Turin - imbued with reverence. In this project, destruction is seen as creation; stains become a beginning, not an end.

This research challenges the conventional rejection of stains in fashion. Instead of treating them as aesthetic embellishments, Liquid Relics integrates stains into the design process through draping. The aim of the project was to explore the possibilities of stain for defining new body relations through draping methods.

Instead of being confined to pre-existing silhouettes, the design process follows the fluidity of abstract splashes, draping them and documenting the evolving forms. Drawing from Hellenic techniques, where fabric follows the body’s natural form, the project explores how stains can shape garments independently. It embraces spontaneity, imperfection, and material transformation, redefining stains as symbols of creation rather than flaws, and prioritizing process over final outcome.
