This project investigates new visual expressions of the paisley motif. Inspired by Miuccia Prada’s methodology — using an element deemed subjectively ugly to create interesting ready-to-wear — paisley was chosen as a starting point for designing. The pattern is recognizable but has ceased to evolve in its look which created an opportunity to challenge the norms of print design in women’s fashion.

This project mainly utilized digital print and classic construction techniques to develop paisley motifs and shapes in both 2D surface design and in 3D, resulting in a women’s ready-to-wear collection of five looks. The collection demonstrates how classic print traditions can be reinterpreted and how questioning perceptions of ugliness can create beauty.
