The SSLIS Seminar | AI in young people's everyday information practices
AI in young people's everyday information practices: Producing knowledge through co-research – Aira Huttunen & Tuula Nygård, University of Oulu.
Aira and Tuula will present ongoing work on a chapter for a book tentatively titled Artificial Intelligence and Social Justice Intersections in Library and Information Studies: Challenges and Opportunities.
AI technologies are increasingly important to the ways youth encounter, seek, share and manage information. Apps that use AI to target, select and generate content have become significant information sources for youth in Finland. Yet, public and scientific discussions of the impact of AI seldom consider youths own perspectives. Our study utilizes co-research methods with youth to understand how AI systems influence their everyday information practices. We have recruited 12 young co-researchers to participate in all phases of the research: planning, data collection, analysis and reporting of the findings. Drawing from this research, we focus on the co-production of knowledge. We have analyzed the post-interviews, focusing on how the co-researchers described their agency while participating in the project.
