The SSLIS Seminar | Digital Death

Digital Death: new challenges for a maturing information Society — Jesse Dinneen.

Jesse will present an overview of his past research on Personal Information Management and Information Ethics and Governance and show how these topics intersect to guide his next research direction.

During their work and lives, people today accumulate digital collections that later become digital legacies for their families, digital heritage for society, and data for science and medicine. Yet through various circumstances, those collections are often lost by the individual, inaccessible to their family, or when donated to an institution, stay unprocessed and thus effectively hidden until they expire. Work remains to improve these outcomes with new information management tools and literacy, but a path forward must account for diverse cultural views on death, currently insufficient information policies and regulation, and ethical puzzles surrounding long-term preservation and digital identities, AI thanabots, and digital traces left on the Web.
