Academic Ceremony

Such academic celebrations date back to the oldest medieval universities in southern Europe and similar events have been held at Swedish universities since the 17th century. The University of Borås celebrated its first Academic Ceremony in 2014 but has been holding professorial inaugurations since 2000.

The doctoral conferment ceremony is for those who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis during the year. Professorial inaugurations date back to the Middle Ages, when new professors were officially installed in their posts. In addition, we celebrate our new associate professors/docents and the university's Pedagogical Prize is awarded to the teacher who, through conscious efforts, makes a particular difference to students’ learning.

Invitations are sent out in February each year. All university employees are welcome to attend the ceremony and the following reception. Afterwards, a banquet dinner for specially invited guests is held.

The next celebration will take place at the Borås Congress Centre on 8 May 2026.

The Academic Ceremony for 2025 took place on 9 May. A news articles with photographs is available here.
