Employee at the Swedish School of Library and Information Science has passed away

Johan Sundeen joined the University of Borås in 2007. Over the years, he worked in various posts at the university, primarily at the Swedish School of Library and Information Science.

Johan was a highly appreciated teacher and colleague in the Master's programme in Strategic Information and Communication and in the programmes in Library and Information Science. He was a supervisor at all levels, including in the doctoral programme. As a historian of ideas, he was very interested in the intersection between society, culture, and people. His research and writing included 19th and 20th century intellectual life, the concept of education, church history, and library history. Academic freedom was another major interest for Johan; he was one of the initiators of the Humboldt Seminar. He was also Vice-Chair of the university's Research and Education Board, Chair of the Viktor Rydberg Society, a regular contributor to the daily press and media, and an author.

“With Johan's passing, the university has lost a highly valued, generous, and committed employee and colleague. With his both deep and broad humanistic knowledge, Johan had so much to contribute to Library and Information Science, perhaps especially in library history, one of the areas that eventually became his specialty,” said Åsa Söderlind, Acting Dean of Faculty at the Faculty of Librarianship, Information, Education and IT.

In addition to his work at the Swedish School of Library and Information Science, he was active in the police training programme, where Johan played a major role in the application and establishment of the main field of study of Police Work.
“Johan has been extremely important in the Faculty's work to become a complete academic environment,” said Stina Sundling, Dean of Faculty of the Faculty of Police Work.

A memorial table with a condolences book in memory of Johan Sundeen can be found in the break room at C4 in the Balder building. A memorial service open to all university employees is being planned. The date and time will be published in PS.
