Gender Equality Plan

The university's work on gender equality is described in the Report on Focus on Gender Mainstreaming at the University of Borås (Reg. no. 692-22, Swedish only).

The university's work is based on three processes: vision, goals, and strategies; quality assurance work for education and research; as well as our systematic work environment efforts. These three processes provide a systematic approach to our gender equality work. Our work regarding gender equality lies within the framework of the 2030 Agenda, the indicators of which are something to which the university aims to prioritise.

We strive for equality and diversity when it comes to employment and in terms of admission to our doctoral programmes. The university also works according to clear guidelines to prevent discrimination and sexual harassment. Further, we conduct training in gender mainstreaming for our teachers and managers.

The university has also been awarded the HR Excellence in Research Award, a certification from the European Commission. This means that requirements are in place regarding gender equality and equal conditions when it comes to the working environment for our researchers.

For several years in a row, the University of Borås has been named the best university in Sweden in terms of achieving the highest key figures in gender equality (JÄMIX). This award is given by the Key Performance Indicators Institute, which evaluates the best gender equality index among higher education institutions in Sweden.

Our students are just as important as our employees in our work for increased gender equality. In our contact with our students, we see an opportunity to change knowledge and behaviour about gender equality for future generations. We therefore want our students to feel that the University of Borås is an environment where everyone is treated and judged equally on the basis of interests and knowledge and not on the basis of norms about gender. The university strives to offer an attractive study environment for all genders and work to develop students' knowledge in this area and ultimately influence their choice of educational programme through a change in educational content. In their educational programmes, students also gain knowledge about, and the opportunity to discuss and problematise, gender and gender issues in order to work for a more sustainable society.

We welcome the high demands placed on the university in terms of gender equality and equal conditions. And it is a matter of course for us that these aspects are included in our own reviews and those of the Swedish Higher Education Authority when it comes to our educational programmes and research. Our work for increased gender equality is intended to progress continuously, and to measure and evaluate this work, we collect data about the university in various ways, which are then reviewed and followed up upon.

With our work for increased gender equality, we seek to ensure that the University of Borås is for everyone, regardless of gender.

Mats Tinnsten, Vice-Chancellor
