Maria brings her design ideas to life in Borås
Why did you choose to pursue the Bachelor’s programme in Fashion Design?
For me, fashion design has always been a way of expressing myself and creating something meaningful. It is not just about clothes, but a form of communication! Sharing ideas and stories, while also exploring both the world around me and my own identity.
What do you think are the most interesting or important parts of the programme?
What I find most interesting is that the programme combines creativity and innovation, not only in theory but also in practice. Students are encouraged to experiment and develop their skills in specialised studios and workshops, which gives us the opportunity to bring our ideas to life in a hands-on way.
What career opportunities will you have after your studies?
I don’t know exactly what the future holds, but I hope to find a working environment that allows me to grow, learn, and keep creating. My goal is to continue developing as a designer while contributing something valuable to the industry.
What do you dream about doing in five years?
In five years, I hope to still be exploring my creativity and pushing my ideas towards innovative and meaningful designs. I would like to contribute to the fashion world in a way that feels authentic and important, whether through unique projects, collaborations, or by developing my own vision as a designer.
What tips do you have for those considering applying for the same programme as you?
Don’t overthink it; just go for it! Big decisions, like starting something you are passionate about or moving to another country, may feel intimidating at first, but they are truly worth it. It’s important to take those steps and give yourself the chance to grow.
Which country are you from and what did you study before?
I am from Greece. My first degree was in Nursing, but fashion design entered my life and completely shifted my path. That is where I discovered my true passion and interest.
Why did you choose to study fashion in Sweden, and in Borås?
What attracted me most was the programme itself. I was really interested in the way the school encourages students to be creative and to develop original ideas, while at the same time giving us the opportunity to realise those ideas in a very practical way. The Swedish School of Textiles also places a strong focus on sustainability and technologically advanced approaches to fashion, which I believe are essential for the future of the industry. It is a place that truly supports its students and inspires them to grow as designers.
How did you find information about the Swedish School of Textiles?
I actually discovered the school through Instagram. I was impressed by the work of the students and graduates that I saw online, and it really inspired me to apply.
Is it a big step to study abroad?
Yes, it was definitely a big step. There were challenges, like finding accommodation and adapting to a new reality, but it was absolutely worth it. The experience has been rewarding on so many levels.
What is the school like for international students?
The school is very supportive. All the lectures are in English, and there are always people willing to help and guide you whenever you need it. That makes the transition much easier.
Where is your favorite spot to study or create your work?
For me, the best place to work is always at the school. There are plenty of spaces for studying and creating, and it is inspiring to be surrounded by classmates and other creative people.
What do you like to do in Borås in your spare time?
I love exploring nature. Borås is such a green city, so I really enjoy taking walks by the lake or spending time outdoors.
