Breastfeeding in the context of intimate partner violence

An existential phenomenon in caring context

Breastfeeding in the context of intimate partner violence

Background

The majority of mothers-to-be in Sweden plan to breastfeed their children, and research shows that support increases the chances to do so. Partners are especially important supporters, but not all partners are supportive. Women who experience Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) are especially vulnerable and exposed. According to previous phenomenological research, both breastfeeding and violence exposedness have existential meaning for women during the childbearing period. It is therefore valuable to investigate what the combination of these two experiences means for the women. By giving them a voice, health professionals get a basis for improving care and support.

The aim of the project

The overall aim of the project is to develop in-depth knowledge about the existential meanings of IPV during the breastfeeding period, and what caring means in this context.

Method

The project has a life-world theoretical approach with phenomenological and hermeneutical studies.
