This work package identifies papers (2002-12) within the Web of Science (online academic database) in each of five NCD disease areas. It maps the volume of relevant research outputs in EU member states, using publications of research findings as a proxy indicator, enabling examination of geographical distribution of NCD research activity and its characteristics. The work package shows the likely effects of these papers on healthcare in member states using three indirect measures:

• extent to which they have provided the evidence base for clinical guidelines relevant to NCDs, including the recommendations of the Cochrane Collaboration,
• extent of their citation in stories about NCD research in newspapers and the media in the member state
• effectiveness of the research in terms of its presence among the references in government and international policy documents concerned with human health.
