The European textile sector stands as a vital pillar of the continental industrial landscape, yet it currently faces profound structural challenges necessitating a comprehensive "Twin Transition" toward digitalization and sustainability. Innovation in circular processes (specifically regarding recycling, traceability, and certification) is central to establishing a unique selling proposition for European textiles and ensuring the industry's resilience within increasingly volatile global market environments.
Two overarching trends required to augment the innovation ecosystem are the acceleration of digital transformation and the widespread adoption of green circular innovations. However, there remains a documented lack of technical expertise among textile SMEs regarding advanced digital integration and the exploitation of circular principles, such as eco-design and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Therefore, a holistic approach is imperative to drive the digital and green transition through knowledge transfer and co-creation between academia, the public sector, and the business community. Industrial clusters will serve as the primary facilitators, bridging the gap between technological innovation and industrial application.
The primary objective of the Skills4Circularity project is to facilitate the flow and co-creation of knowledge between Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), Vocational Education and Training (VET) providers, research centers, and the industrial sector to foster new, innovative, and multidisciplinary approaches to teaching and learning. In parallel, the initiative aims to stimulate entrepreneurial mindsets and transversal competencies in learners and staff, in alignment with the European Green Deal and the European Skills Agenda. Furthermore, the project will enhance the quality and relevance of skills developed and certified through EQF-aligned micro-credentials, while simultaneously reinforcing regional clusters to support the continuous professional development of the textile workforce.
