Recent research corroborates cellulosic paper as a potential raw material in the form of yarns (i.e. paper-yarn) for textiles. Cellulosic paper is biodegradable, eco-friendly and sustainable material, and unlike cotton, it is locally available in Sweden. However, the current use of paper-yarn in the industry is limited due to its high stiffness properties. The existing literature extensively identifies the problem but the research elucidating the paper-yarn stiffness mechanism and identifying the contribution of material parameters have remained elusive. In this context, the present project aims to investigate the mechanics of paper-yarn and develop a mathematical model for its stiffness properties. The project outcome will not only help in demystifying the stiffness behaviour but also guide to engineer the paper-yarn stiffness for the specific end-use applications.
