The cemetery as a subject-didactic arena for learning and social engagement

Within the research group SONOMA, a systematic review of approximately 150 international studies examines how cemeteries are used in educational contexts related to sustainability, biodiversity, cultural heritage, historical consciousness, existential meaning-making, and minority rights.

The project maps the subject-didactic potential of cemeteries, identifies conceptual and methodological patterns, and highlights key research gaps, particularly in Nordic contexts. In doing so, it establishes a knowledge base for future comparative research and for international, cross-sectoral collaboration at the intersection of education, heritage studies, and civil society.

The project is funded by the University of Borås.
