Waste to valuable materials to address marine cold climate challenges

WAVE

The project aims to strengthen the Nordic bioeconomy by addressing sustainability challenges through cross-border collaboration, education and innovation, and research.

Marine waste such as non-biodegradable plastic is a global challenge, and in the Nordic region with a cold climate, there are challenges that require tailor-made approaches to address this. This project promotes innovation, collaboration, and education within the Nordic bioeconomy, with a focus on the utilization of aquatic biomass, marine waste, circular cycles, and sustainable material development.

In addition to the University of Borås, the project involves Arcada University of Applied Sciences in Finland (project leader), the University of Latvia in Latvia, LAB University of Applied Science in Finland, and a company from Åland, Under ytan.

Activities include mapping local sustainability challenges, organizing hackathons to generate innovative solutions, and a number of international workshops. Great emphasis is placed on knowledge exchange, to develop case studies and new working methods that can be utilized within the project. One of the main goals is to improve bioeconomy skills among students through interdisciplinary learning.

The project will develop digital learning materials, including course modules, case studies and problem-solving activities, ensuring practical, industry-relevant education. Hackathons and workshops will serve as platforms to co-create solutions and integrate expertise from academia and industry. Proposals for research projects will also be developed.

By working at the Nordic and Baltic level, the project benefits from shared expertise, regional synergies and stronger networks. Expected results include industry-relevant solutions from implemented hackathons and strengthened cooperation between research institutions and companies. The project will contribute to long-term sustainability, innovation and economic growth in the Nordic bioeconomy.
