In June of 2022, I completed my doctoral thesis titled A battle against the uncontrollable at the limit of existence – The breathless patient in need of ambulance care.
I work as a university lecturer with a main focus on prehospital emergency care. I have been employed at the University of Borås since 2014, primarily within the specialist nurse education programme within intensive care, but also within the undergraduate nursing programme. Currently, a portion of my teaching time is dedicated to the specialist nurse education programme with a focus on ambulance care. Before that, I worked as a specialist nurse in intensive care starting in the late 1990s.
My doctoral thesis revolves around patients who seek ambulance care due to breathlessness. There are significant knowledge gaps concerning patients' medical histories and clinical signs when they seek help for breathlessness, as well as what can predict a serious cause or the risk of complications in a patient with breathlessness in the prehospital context. Additionally, there is limited understanding of how patients with breathlessness experience their situation to the extent that ambulance care is required and how care is perceived by patients when experiencing breathlessness. To gain insights into patients' experiences behind the symptoms and signs they show, conditions are created to offer the patients care at the appropriate level.
