I work as a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the Faculty of Police and teach on the Police Programme and the freestanding courses at the Faculty.
My doctoral thesis, Loyalty and professional standard: A study of middle-managers in the police, questioned how leaders navigate the often conflicting demands for professional standard, i.e. the 'collective normative values, procedures and process'. Through document analysis, interviews and extensive field research within a police district and a continued learning course for leaders, this thesis mapped out the backstage of policing. Combining sociology of professions, labour relations and organisation and leadership theory with police sociology, new insights to the management of policing arose.
In recent years my research has been on legal rights, legal cultures, dirty/body-work, sexual harassment within the police and the legal ripple effects of mass violence incidents for victims and bereaved. These subjects have largely been informed by my longstanding interest in the interplay between, on one hand, professional prestige, autonomy and governance, and on the other hand, legal and moral rights, within and across the criminal justice system.
