General things to consider when abroad
- Outside the EU, there are no fixed price contracts, which applies to both regular mobile calls and data traffic. It is important to deactivate data roaming, which you do under Settings, Mobile Network and select Mobile Network Options. Slide the Data Roaming slider to deactivate.
- When calls are made to you abroad, your subscription is charged for the cost from the Swedish border if you answer. In the case of voicemail, it does not cost the recipient anything for the calling person to leave a voicemail message, but you pay an international rate for listening to the message.
- Wireless networks (WiFi) are often available in hotels, airports, cafés, etc. Use it if you need to download emails or use data traffic on your phone to avoid expensive bills when you get home.
More tips when abroad
- Keep in mind that some services and apps may automatically use data traffic in the background. You can choose which apps are allowed to update in the background or turn this feature off completely via Settings, General, and select Background update.
- The push function downloads emails to your phone as soon as there is a new message. This function should be set to manual mode (it’s also a good idea to do this within Sweden as it extends battery life). You change to “manual push” and can change the intervals of downloads via Settings, Mail, Accounts, and select Download new data.
- Enable Find My iPhone as your phone can be tracked via iCloud in case of loss. To activate the service, go to Settings, [your name], iCloud and select Find My iPhone. This service should always be enabled.
- Make a note of the IMEI number and keep it in a safe place. The IMEI number is the identity of the phone and is important to have at hand in case of phone loss. The IMEI number can be found on the receipt from IT, on the box and can also be accessed in the phone by dialling *#06# on the keypad.
