Welcome to the Textile Overview Course – Weaving (3 credits)
Course Description
In this standalone textile overview course, you will gain fundamental knowledge in weaving technology for industrial applications. Explore the intricate structure and properties of fabrics produced on an industrial scale. The introductory lectures immerse you in the manufacturing processes and machines, guiding you from yarn to the final fabric. Building upon this foundation, the course delves into essential elements of weaving theory. Topics include basic weave structures and their derivations, and introduction to double weaves, as well as threading, lift plans, and weaving factor. Characteristics and properties are also included. The course also discusses production and cost calculations.
Course Start
This fully online distance course begins on September 2, 2024, exclusively on the Canvas platform. Subsequent modules will be accessible on fixed dates within two weeks, with each module after the completion of the previous one.
Course, Structure, and Implementation
As a participant in this distance course, you enjoy the freedom to progress through the content at your preferred pace. This 3-credit course entails approximately 80 hours of study, involving activities such as watching lectures, reading literature, and completing quizzes. The diverse media provided complement each other, enhancing your learning experience.
To successfully pass the course, completion of all modules is required. Each module contains several chapters, and you progress by answering the quiz at the end of each module before moving to the next. The six modules in this course are as follows:
- Weaving Technology
- Characteristics of Woven Fabric
- Basic Weaves and Properties of Woven Fabrics
- Derivations from Basic Weaves
- Single and Double Weaves
- Yarn and Fabric Calculations
The first exam is available after three weeks, and you can choose to take it at any time within a flexible three-hour timeframe. However, please note that there are only three re-exams available, with the latest one scheduled two weeks after the course concludes. It's crucial to complete the initial exam before attempting re-exams.

The literature of the course is available through the University library as an E-book.

Register and create a student account
You must register so as not to lose your place in the programme or courses to which you have been admitted.
When you register for a programme or course, it means that you are confirming your admission and have decided to pursue these studies.
You must be registered to participate in the educational programme and for results to be reported from exams, laboratory work, or other study achievements.
At the same time you register, you create your student account. With the student account, you get access to the systems you need for your studies, for example the learning platform. You will also get access to a student email account.

You can find your schedule, including locations, in the digital schedule tool KronoX. Please note that changes to the schedule can take place at short notice. Therefore, make a habit of checking the schedule in KronoX regularly.
The learning platform Canvas
On the New Student website, you can find a lot of good information, including about the learning platform, Canvas, which you get access to after you register and create your student account. It is on the learning platform that we post information about the courses and this is also where a lot of communication between teachers and students, as well as between students, takes place.
