Welcome to the undergraduate programme in Fashion Design!
I warmly welcome you as a new student at the Swedish School of Textiles in Borås! You met me during the assessment day. My name is Jan Tepe, and I am the program coordinator of the fashion design undergraduate program. Below is some information about the preparations and start of your studies. Please read it carefully so that you can prepare accordingly.
About the programme and the upcoming term
During the coming years, you will gain knowledge and skills about, among other things, textile production, practical and theoretical design methods, how to structure and define your own design process, how fashion reflects the society we live in, and how we communicate via clothing. You will work with both shorter and longer design projects, together with classmates and external partners or on your own, and both practically and theoretically explore your ideas and describe your work in written form. Our ambition is to give you an education with high standards and to give you the tools and conditions to meet these standards.
You have probably been informed that we give a preparatory course. It is not included in the programme but is given in connection with the start of the semester during calendar weeks 34–35 (starting on August 19th). I recommend that you join it. In that course, you will be trained in working with different types of more difficult pattern design solutions and detail sewing, knowledge that will help you within the upcoming programme courses.
During the first week, various activities will be planned, both introductions and information meetings. Take the chance to participate in the introductory activities offered to get started with student life quickly. Times and places for the various introductory activities and the lessons/lectures you have can be found via the link to the schedule that is further down on this page. Since the schedule changes from time to time, it is good to check the schedule regularly.
On Tuesday, September 3rd, you will meet for an official introduction with the programme coordinator. During that day, we will talk about the structure of the programme: the courses, the labs, and a little bit about what it is like to study fashion design with us.

Program-Specific Information
- You will get your own desk and share the space with the other fashion design classes. After each semester, the classrooms must be emptied and cleaned for which you as a student are responsible.
- Additionally, at the end of the spring semester, everything must be moved out. How the desks are assigned to the students is decided by me and is non-negotiable.
- The students of the third-year class in fashion design are currently attending internships and will be back again in November this year. Specific desks decided by me are reserved for them.
- Communication during the courses takes place via email and the program webpage Canvas where folders for submissions are available. Note that this can vary depending on the course responsible and how they set up their courses.
Credit Points
Course credits count 1.5 Hp = 1 week of studies/40h work week containing approx. 12-16 hours are allocated for teaching, while the rest is dedicated to independent work. Keep track of your points, as the courses within the program are linked to each other. That means you need to have previous courses passed to be able to attend later following courses. Course credits are linked to CSN.
Draping Mannequins
Draping Mannequins are available for all students and are borrowed/rented out per semester. Göran Jansson, göran.jansson@hb.se (janitor), who has his office inside the administration sector on the fourth floor will provide one for you.
Material costs
Everything you produce in the lab has to be paid by you. It is preferred that you pay immediately, yet no later than once the amount exceeds 300SEK. You can either pay using the online payment system Swish or via credit card at the student reception desk in the main building of the university.
Course literature
The course responsibles will inform you about possible purchases of course literature, which is also listed in the course plans.
Work ethic
Arrive on time and be prepared for lectures, tutorials, and presentations. If you do not show up for tutorials, no new time will be given to you. Presentations, seminars, and reports take place openly in front of the class and teachers. All courses are held in English.
Introduction to the labs
To be able to use the labs, you must attend the introductory courses for our labs. It is crucial that you attend them, otherwise you are not allowed to be in the labs. The schedule for the introductions will be posted on KronoX.
Working in labs
Take care of the equipment you use. Clean the space after you are done with your work in the lab. Report immediately to the technicians if anything breaks or does not function as intended. Be on time when you have sessions scheduled with technicians.
Computer rooms
You have access to computers and printers. It is prohibited to bring food and drinks into labs and computer rooms.
Opening hours
From 07:00 to midnight (labs until 17:00).

Register and create a student account
You must register so as not to lose your place in the programme or courses to which you have been admitted.
When you register for a programme or course, it means that you are confirming your admission and have decided to pursue these studies.
You must be registered to participate in the educational programme and for results to be reported from exams, laboratory work, or other study achievements.
At the same time you register, you create your student account. With the student account, you get access to the systems you need for your studies, for example the learning platform. You will also get access to a student email account.

How to find your schedule
Schedule in KronoX
You can find your schedule, including locations, in the digital schedule tool KronoX. Please note that changes to the schedule can take place at short notice. Therefore, make a habit of checking the schedule in KronoX regularly.
The learning platform Canvas
On the New Student website, you can find a lot of good information, including about the learning platform, Canvas, which you get access to after you register and create your student account. It is on the learning platform that we post information about the courses and this is also where a lot of communication between teachers and students, as well as between students, takes place.

Kick-off and Orientation Days
Each term begins with a kickoff. The Student Union in Borås is responsible for the activities that are organised.

The week before the courses start, the university offers a number of information sessions that are good for you as a new student to take part in. You likely have many questions and concerns before the start of the term, and it’s here that you will have the opportunity to get answers to your questions and feel ready for the start of your studies.
