Weaving Technology Lab

In the Weaving Technology Lab, the most modern equipment for jacquard weaving, as well as machine and hand-weaving, can be found, along with more traditional equipment.

It is possible to weave using most materials in yarn form that are available on the market or with the materials developed by us or our partners.

In the lab, students at the Swedish School of Textiles carry out their introductory courses in weaving techniques. They learn how to weave and design a fabric in CAD – from making a sketch to weaving a finished fabric. They learn to calculate the materials used and the price as well as reflect on why the design was chosen, together with its advantages and disadvantages. In more advanced courses as well as in Master’s and doctoral programmes in textile design and textile technology, students learn, among other things, 3D weaving and how to realise their designs.

The lab is a hub for research and development for businesses and industry as well as other institutions, with a sustainability focus on recycled and alternative materials. Other exciting things are happening in the lab, such as allowing materials to take different shapes or form protection or reinforcement, as well as different forms of "memory yarns" that can be influenced to do, well, whatever your imagination tells you.
